Summary: Fantastic Album
Comment: I enjoyed this album a lot. It has a lot of heart and it gives you a good feeling when you listen to it because it is so real. I think Akon out did himself tenfold. I hope his next album is as good as FREEDOM.

Summary: Disappointing!
Comment: This album is very disappointing. Akon's first two albums were 5 stars in my book but this album is horrible. Every song sounds the same and is about the same thing. There is no heart or feeling in the songs like the other albums. It seems like Akon just threw this album together in a few hours. Before this album I would have considered any Akon album a must have but this one is just GARBAGE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Comment: THis album is good. I was skeptical of purchasing this album. WHen I purchased this album, I was feeling it. This album marked a growth in Akon's career. This album exemplifies the more dance-friendly side of Akon. This does not mean he has abandoned his hip-hop roots. The key is to take the album's vibe to the light from the dark.

Summary: Enjoyable Album, Though Flawed - 3 Stars
Comment: FREEDOM is essentially another enjoyable AKON album, if not as potent as the triple-platinum, Grammy-nominated KONVICTED. It lacks the overall character of that album and written all over it is a persona that is underrated. That persona may be accurate as the first week sales of KONVICTED and FREEDOM differed about 173,000 copies (KONVICTED opened at #2 with 284,000 while FREEDOM opened cooler at #7 with 111,000 copies). However, the cooler reception that FREEDOM has received does deal with a number of factors. None of the factors affect the overall quality as FREEDOM is solid and less vulgar than either previous Akon album. That could also have to do with the controversy that Akon Thiam has generated, but I'll leave that for the fans to speculate.
"Right Now (Na Na)" is a fine opening track, though not nearly as "gangsta" as "Shakedown" which opened KONVICTED. Though that is one thing that the listener must keep in mind - this album is different from both Akon's previous affairs. "Right Now" is understated in comparison to "Smack That" or "I Wanna F*** You" as far as singles are concerned, but it is nonetheless good. "Beautiful" featuring Colby O'Donis & Kardinal Offishall is solid, but not stellar. Akon sounds great as ever, but the track feels like it is missing the same zest Akon had on previous albums. Oh Well.
"Keep You Much Longer" is a good, solid track, though it suffers like FREEDOM does ultimately by being a departure from Akon's previous work. "Trouble Maker" featuring Sweet Rush isn't bad, nor is it stellar, the main flaw of FREEDOM. "We Don't Care" is another truly genuine hit from FREEDOM, after a couple of so-so solid, though not-stellar tracks. Second single "I'm So Paid" featuring Lil' Wayne & Young Jeezy is easily the album's strongest track. Why? Because it is most similar to Akon's previous work that has more of a touch of 'gangsta', hardcore qualities. Let's face it, weren't you shocked that FREEDOM didn't sport a 'parental advisory - explicit lyrics' tags like the previous two Akon albums?
"Holla Holla" features the overused T-Pain, though it is another hit. "Against The Grain" featuring Ray Lavender is also a hit in which Akon sounds like he rediscovered his gift for writing about strippers. Figure that up! From that point on, FREEDOM features enjoyable, though sometimes boring, underdeveloped tracks. "Be With You" is stronger than most of the proceeding, but it isn't necessarily memorable. "Sunny Day" sounds similar to TROUBLE's "Pot Of Gold". "Birthmark" sounds a bit out of character for Akon with acoustic guitars and an understated beat. "Over The Edge" sounds more like a contemporary R&B track that might appear on somebody else's album (not Akon), but it is forgettable. "Freedom" suffers from title-track syndrome - not as good as other tracks on the album. The production is adventurous and Akon sounds good, but let's face it, would you rather hear Akon singing about "freedom" or "booty"?
Again, FREEDOM does successfully show Akon trying to stretch himself a bit, but it doesn't always work. It does work more often than not, which is why FREEDOM is still an enjoyable album. Like Akon's two previous efforts, he hasn't quite found how to make the "killer" album, if you know what I mean. True, stripper anthems only go so far, but can Akon really sell the adult contemporary anthems that he attempts? For now, 3 stars for FREEDOM.
