Customer Rating: Summary: Not horrible Comment: I'm an amateur writer that has this product. It was actually sitting on my shelf for a couple years so maybe there is a newer version that corrects a couple things.
My main #1 issue with this: I wrote and rewrote a screenplay in this software and it was 75 pages. I wanted to then move it over to a format that could be shared. I saved it in RTF format. When I open it up in MS Word or any other standard reader, it came up as 72 pages. One thing that is definitely true, it did not keep any of the page breaks. So now there are page breaks mid dialogue block or separating a character name from dialogue, etc. So I guess I need to go through and add those all back manually in Word. I'm not sure if there are any other aspects (margins) that also now need to be adjusted to make this format accurately.
I also noticed that for screenplay formats it generally gives you the choice between single and double spacing between scene headings. But what I've been reading tells me that it is now standard for scene headings to have triple spacing.
I would say that having it paginate correctly is one of the major reasons why I wanted to use screenwriter software. So this to me is a major drawback.
I will say that typing the screenplay into the software is very simple and intuitive, so if they would correct the ability to get the screenplay into other document formats without it losing some formatting, this would be a great product.
Customer Rating: Summary: Hollywood Screen Writer Program Comment: It's a nice program but based on older technology. It won't download to the harddrive.
Customer Rating: Summary: Unless you're producing a blockbuster, this is what you need! Comment: This program is great. The process of writing a screenplay was sped up by the drop down devices employed by this software. It's really easy to use and upload. Yes, you have to leave the disc in your drive in order to use it, but who cares? If all you want is a script that will print onto plain white paper (spell check included), you've found what you need at a very low cost. I was tempted to pay over $100 for the other programs, but decided to stick with this one. All I wanted was a script, and that's what I got from this software. 5 stars!!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Not Worth the Time or Money Comment: Hollywood Screenwriter is not worth the time nor the money; it is designed for the amateur who wants to get "something" on paper, not a professional who not only wants to get something on paper, but wants that something to be the best he/she can create...and then be able to have it work with other elements of filmmaking including Scheduling, Full Production Breakdown Reports, Industry Standard Revision Draft Colors, Rundown Sheets, Budgeting, and Storyboard Linking.
Of what use to the film industry is a program that limits how producers, directors, other writers and production members can use a script, such as that produced with Hollywood Screenwriter? It makes no sense to have to re-type a script using other software that is Industry Standard. Why not just buy a professional program and use it, from the beginning.
I recommend Movie Magic Screenwriter, which formats for--among other types--films, stage plays, telvision producutions, multi-media productions and animations...and also meets Industry Standards for working with various elements of productions. It also imports and converts scripts written in Word, WordPerfect and other formats; so there is no need to retype a script.
A writer who wants to be thought of as a professional should use professional writing tools.
Customer Rating: Summary: Well worth the price. Comment: Although it doesn't come with much of a manual, it will get my screenplay "down on paper". No software will make me a better writer but, if you just need something to do the formatting as you write, this is it. You can learn how to use it in about 10 minutes, and it doesn't cost a bundle.
