Summary: Ice Princesses
Comment: This is a delighful video! It shows the history Women's Figure skating from Madge Syers at the turn of the 20th century, through Sonja Henie, up to the mid-70s with Dorothy Hamill. But it's more than just skating -- this video is also a social commentary on changing women's roles in the 20th century. As women's roles evolved, so did the sport, which is why tracing the history of the sport from the women's perspective is so much more fascinating. At first there was no separate event for women but later a separate "ladies'" event was included. Thanks in part to Sonja Henie (whose young age enabled her to wear shorter skirts) women began to jump freely and spin faster. But female skaters were supposed to be "ladies" -- fragile, docile, delicate ballerinas. But as the sport was re-named "women's" skating, the sport comes full circle with the athleticism (and BOBBED HAIRCUTS!) of Janet Lynn and later Dorothy Hamill. The video is worth it just to see the vintage turn of the century video clips. If you want history of the sport - this is it.

Summary: An absolutely beautiful program
Comment: Whether you are a long-time figure skating fan, or just somebody who appreciates beauty, this video is one of the more wonderful ways to spend an hour. It is beautifully done in every way, and the faces of the women in interviews, on ice and in conversation say everything there is to say about the immense value of amateur sports competition in our society.

Summary: IF YOU LOVE FIGURE SKATING
Comment: If you love figure skating, you'll love this video. I have watched figure skating since I was a teenager, but this video told me everything I didn't know and refreshed me on what I did. It is amazing. I recommend it to anyone who watches skating. I very rarely buy videos, but when I saw this on HBO, I knew that it was something that I had to have. Believe me, you will enjoy it.

Editorial Reviews:

The seemingly effortless beauty of ice skating can be breathtaking. But few truly understand the rigorous demands and sacrifices that the skill requires, or the history that made it all possible. Features rare archival footage, and interviews with U.S. Olympic Gold Medal winners Dorothy Hamill, Tenley Albright, Peggy Fleming and Carol Heiss, Ice legend JoJo Starbuck and many more.
