Englewood, Colo. – September 2, 2005 – Baxa Corporation, a Denver-based
manufacturer of medical devices and systems, offers the Exacta-Med Oral
Dispenser specifically designed for safe oral liquid delivery. The Exacta-Med
Dispenser's design prevents the attachment of a luer needle hub and from
engaging with a needleless connector, eliminating potential error from
wrong-route oral liquid medication administration. Additionally, the dispenser
is labeled “Oral Use Only,” further promoting patient safety.
“Dosing
oral liquid medications with standard luer syringes is unsafe and potentially
hazardous because of the risk of wrong-route administration,” says Mark
Thrasher, Market Manager for the oral dispenser product line. “The dispenser's
syringe-like design provides convenient and accurate administration—that's why
Exacta-Med Oral Dispensers are the global brand leader. They're a dependable,
safe and exact oral dosing tool for infants and children.”
In the 1970's,
Baxa realized the need to minimize the risk of wrong-route administration. A
growing practice was to administer oral medications using hypodermic syringes.
Even with an oral label, syringes inadvertently could be used to administer an
oral medication into an IV site. Baxa set out to correct these potentially
lethal situations.
“I was in a dark Isolette® about to administer
medication to an infant when I realized how easy it would be to injure the baby
by injecting oral medication into the IV line,” says Lynette Lewis, Clinical
Resource Nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa Oklahoma. “The importance of the
Exacta-Med Oral Dispenser became crystal clear to me at that
moment.”
Baxa Corporation strives to enhance efficiencies in hospital
pharmacies and ultimately improve patient safety. The company recently launched
a three-part campaign for its oral dispenser line, aimed at educating pediatric
and neonatal nurses on the risks of wrong-route drug administration. The
campaign consisted of a letter with a request for dispenser samples as an action
step, a complementary advertisement placed in the Journal of Pediatric Health
Care and finally a three-dimensional mailer with an oral dispenser inside a
custom box. Baxa has traditionally marketed its oral dispensers to hospital
pharmacies and response to the nursing campaign have been strong to
date.
