Opening Night at 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect Journalists are Encouraged to Attend
Immediately after the running of the Boston Marathon, the city of Boston will turn its attention to the issue of child abuse and neglect as host for the 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN). The conference is organized by the federal Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN). The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC) is the Local Host. Local, regional and national journalists are encouraged to attend the opening night of NCCAN and the entire conference. Federal and state officials and other key individuals will be available for interview.

WHAT:
Immediately after the running of the
Boston Marathon, the city of Boston will turn its attention to the issue of
child abuse and neglect as host for the week long 15th National Conference on
Child Abuse and Neglect. The conference is organized by the Federal Office on
Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN). The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children (MSPCC) is the Local Host. This national conference has been
held biennially since 1976 and attracts the nation’s most renowned experts in
the field. More than 2,000 policy makers, researchers, social workers,
educators, health practitioners, members of the legal and judicial system, and
community advocates from across the nation will come to Boston to share the
latest research and practice information on child abuse and neglect and
effective prevention and treatment programs.
Federal officials will
discuss the findings of the just released report, Child Maltreatment 2003, which
contains the latest national and state data on child abuse and neglect. State
officials will discuss Massachusetts’ recent successful completion of its
Program Improvement Plan under the Federal Child and Family Services Review.
Nationally, more than 900,000 children are victims of abuse and neglect each
year and an estimated 1500 children died of abuse or neglect in 2003. In
Massachusetts, more than 30,000 children are victims of abuse of neglect each
year and some 14 children are estimated to have died as a result of child abuse
or neglect in 2003.
Local, regional and national journalists are
encouraged to attend the Opening Night Gala, including speakers, music and a
reception, as well as the entire conference. Federal and state officials and
other key individuals will be available for interview.
