An International Day Against Drug Abuse
June 26 marks the day of international drug addiction treatment and prevention awareness, headed by the United Nations.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According
to UN Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, “This day is also an occasion to
highlight the fact that nearly 200 million people are still consuming illegal
drugs.” In his message on the UNODC website Mr. Annan continued, “On this day,
let us strengthen our collective resolve to live in a society free of drugs, and
let us encourage all our fellow human beings to make personal choices to lead
healthy lives.”
The theme for 2005 is “Value yourself…make healthy
choices,” encouraging young people to choose activities that are creative,
productive and uplifting rather than taking drugs and leading them down the road
to self-destruction, misery and even death.
While advocating the message
from an international peace-keeping organization is vital, it also takes
