(PRWEB) August 28, 2004 -- 10Minute Flash (www.10minuteflash.com),
the popular online tool for beginners and experts a like to create unique
multimedia web websites just became more popular. It's now free for anyone to
use.
10Minute Flash is a pioneer in what is now called Rich Media
Applications. A Rich Media Application acts like a WYSIWYG desktop application
that runs in any browser without having to be installed on your PC. 10Minute
Flash allows you to create an animated website similar to if you were using a
word processor. 10Minute Flash allows you to add up to eight pages of stylized
text and thumbnail images. You can also select web themes, colors, animations,
sound and music and a host of other features, all using familiar desktop style
controls.
10Minute Flash is the brainchild of Kirk Lewis and Tom
McCracken of LevelTen Design. The project started in fall of 2000 when Tom was
searching for an affordable, easy way for the masses to create websites. "The
original idea was to create an online tool to build static HTML sites," remarks
Tom McCracken. "Kirk, however, was learning the just released Macromedia Flash 5
which had him pretty excited over some of the new features." Kirk eventually
convinced Tom to pursue a Flash based multimedia website builder.
After
two rounds of development, the second version of 10Minute Flash was launched in
March of 2002. Version 2 had a loyal following. "We had people calling in every
day who stated it was the best tool they had found," remembers Tom. "Many people
called us from around the world and wanted to know how they could resell the
system."
However, despite its popularity, 10Minute Flash never matured
into a profitable business model. LevelTen spent the next two years trying to
figure out the secret to offering a good product and quality support for under
$25 a month. Unfortunately, they never found the secret. It was their custom web
development business that kept them going through those lean years. Now LevelTen
Design has blossomed into one of the best-known web consulting and design
companies on the Internet.
"The irony is that when we started this
venture, I learned Flash at night in a hotel room while completing a million
dollar online banking project. Then I went to dealing with the other end of the
spectrum, sub-$25 a month sites. We spent years building $1000 to $3000 custom
sites and now we are focused on best practices driven site in the $10,000 to
$50,000 range." "We have built them all and now know which kind of websites
perform and which don't".
Over the last five years, LevelTen has sold
hundreds of websites at all price points. This journey has molded Tom's current
philosophy about web development. "We get ten calls a day from people asking for
a site without any concrete business goals. My standard reply is, 'You can get a
website for free to millions of dollars and they all do the same thing-display
text and graphics in a browser. What you really want is to build an Internet
profit center around web best practices and sound business concepts - and that
takes expertise and time.'"
Tom estimates that nine out of ten callers
ignore his warning about missing profit opportunities and go with a cheap
website. LevelTen has found that their best customers are those that have had an
unproductive site and are seeking to re-design their website into a
producer.
"That's when it came to me, what to do with 10Minute Flash. If
we make it free, then people can experiment risk free with the challenges of
successfully extending their business online. If they need help in the future,
they will make an educated client for our web consulting and design
services."
