Charles Jay Offers Oscar Odds Like You've Never Seen Them Before
Oddsmaker posts dozens and dozens of propositions for Academy Awards night
Elkhart, IN (PRWEB) February 26, 2005 -- Writer-publisher-oddsmaker Charles
Jay has been known to be rather creative with his propositions. But this time,
he may have outdone himself.
Jay, the editor/publisher of TotalAction.com
(http://www.totalaction.com) and editor-in-chief of The Sweet
Science (http://www.thesweetscience.com), who compiles numbers for
public consumption and fantasy gaming through his service, "The Charles Jay
Line," made up his mind that this year he was going to put together more Academy
Award propositions than anyone else.
The result is nearly five dozen
special, original Oscar propositions that interested parties can find at Diamond
Sports International (http://www.2betdsi.com), one of the world's largest online
sportsbooks. "I could have probably done five dozen more," says Jay of his
efforts. "Maybe I'll do that next year."
To Jay, it's his own
extravaganza of sorts to accompany the pomp and circumstance surrounding the
Oscars - which will be awarded on Sunday, February 27 - and to carve out a
niche. "I like to do with the Oscars what every Tom, Dick and Harry does with
the Super Bowl," he says.
Indeed, Jay has compiled a "Thom, Dick and
Harry" proposition, as Oscar wins by Randy Thom (Sound Editing and Sound
Mixing), Kirby Dick (Documentary Feature) and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban" (Visual Effects and Original Score) bring a price of 150/1. In the
"Italian-American Connection' prop, it is 800/1 that Leonardo DiCaprio, Alan
Alda, Virginia Madsen and Martin Scorcese will all win the big prize in their
respective categories. The "British Invasion" prop offers 333/1 that the Best
Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor winners will all hail
from the U.K.
The "Hudson-Hawke" proposition makes it 74/1 that both
Robert Hudson (Documentary Short Subject) and Ethan Hawke (Adapted Screenplay)
come away with wins, and its 11/5 (+220) that a "Kaufman & Kaufman" parlay
comes in - that is, Charlie Kaufman for Best Original Screenplay ("Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") and Ross Kaufman for Best Documentary Feature
("Born Into Brothels"). Then there's the personal favorite of Jay, who also
regarded as one of the world's foremost boxing writers - the "Ali-Frazier" prop,
which offers 11/1 if both Karolyn Ali's "Tupac: Resurrection" wins for
Documentary Feature and John Frazier captures the Visual Effects award for
"Spider Man 2."
Elsewhere, it is 55/1 that all four acting winners will
be first-time nominees; 3/1 that they'll all be American-born, and 600/1 that
none of them will come from a film nominated for Best Picture. It is almost
100/1 (+9979) that the oldest nominee will win all four of the acting Oscars.
Jay went for a bit more levity in his propositions related to the
"Razzie" awards (the "worst" of everything - bestowed on Saturday) and in his
Razzie-Oscar combinations. In his "My Fellow Americans" prop, it was 40/1 that
Alan Alda will win an Oscar for playing a senator in "The Aviator" and that
George W. Bush will capture a Razzie for playing a president in "Fahrenheit
9/11." The "WMD" prop yielded a 30/1 return for a "Fahrenheit 9/11" sweep by
nominees Bush (Worst Actor), Condaleeza Rice (Worst Supporting Actress) and
Donald Rumsfeld (Worst Supporting Actor). In the "Hilary Squared" prop, the
payoff was just under 4/1 (+375) if Hilary Swank wins a Best Actress Oscar and
Hilary Duff wins a Worst Actress Razzie.
The "Stoned" proposition paid
8/1 if Sharon Stone takes home Worst Supporting Actress and Oliver Stone wins
Worst Director. If they also won other awards for Worst Screen Couple and Worst
Screenplay, respectively, the "Really Stoned" prop brought 60/1.
"The
bottom line is that this is a lot of fun," Jay says. "It gives people another
reason to watch the Oscars, aside from seeing if Chris Rock is going to say the
'F' word.
"Come to think of it, I should probably put odds on that too.
So keep checking back."
