The Nanotech Company Co-Founder Wins 2005 Japan Prize
The company’s Co-Founder and Scientific Advisory Board Chairman, Erkki Ruoslahti, M.D. PhD, will receive the 2005 Japan Prize.
San Diego, CA (PRWEB via PR Web
Direct) January 13, 2005 -– The Nanotech Company, LLC, a leading small tech
advisory firm, is proud that the company’s Co-Founder and Scientific Advisory
Board Chairman, Erkki Ruoslahti, M.D. PhD, will receive the 2005 Japan Prize.
The award is given for his decisive role in elucidating the molecular mechanism
of cell-to-extracellular matrix adhesion.
The Japan Prize (and cash
award) is presented at a rare public appearance of the Emperor at the focus of a
one-week celebration.
Dr. Ruoslahti said, “I am thrilled and honored to
be receiving this prestigious prize. It is in recognition of work done about 20
years ago when we showed that a 3 amino acid chemical motif is the key structure
for cell attachment. Compounds that contain this so-called RGD peptide motif are
used in the clinic to prevent blood clotting, and RGD drugs for other uses are
under development. My particular current interest is to use RGD and other
peptides to build 'smart' nanoparticles that can deliver drugs to tumors.”
Darrell Brookstein, Managing Director and Co-Founder of The Nanotech
Company, LLC said, “This international award for scientific achievement and
service to humanity is in recognition of Dr. Ruoslahti’s work in biology. Many
winners have been awarded the Nobel. We wish our SAB Chairman the heartiest of
congratulations and look forward to the early results of his current
nano-medicine work.”
The Japan Prize is awarded for original and
outstanding achievements in science and technology that are recognized as having
advanced the frontiers of knowledge and served the cause of peace and prosperity
for mankind.
