Jack Shapiro - "If Government Can't Guarantee Safety of Imported Drugs, Why Do We Import So Much of Them?"
"Both the Clinton and Bush administrations have cautioned about the government's inability to guarantee the safety of imported pharmaceuticals, yet, the government allows importation of $50 billion per year of these products," notes Jack Shapiro, an internationally-known healthcare marketing consultant, futurist, broadcast journalist, and public speaker
Maywood, NJ (PRWEB) November 18, 2004 -- “Both the Clinton and Bush
administrations have cautioned about the government’s inability to guarantee the
safety of imported pharmaceuticals, yet the government allows importation of $50
billion per year of these products,” notes Jack Shapiro an internationally-known
healthcare marketing consultant, futurist, broadcast journalist and public
speaker.
“In fact, we have a trade deficit in pharmaceuticals,” Shapiro
adds. “For the first nine months of this year, we’ve imported $40 billion in
pharmaceuticals and exported only $21 billion. In 2003, we imported $50 billion
and exported $23 billion.
“These figures only include what is shipped
through ports that are then reported by the Census Bureau,” Shapiro explains.
“If Mrs. Smith boards of bus-full of senior citizens and goes to Canada or
Mexico to buy her pharmaceuticals, they’re not included in these
figures.”
These findings add fuel to the fiery political debate over drug
importation. “It is ironic, if not a bit hypocritical, that the government fears
for the safety of imported pharmaceuticals, yet, allows a flood of them to
legally enter the country every month. Add to this, the fact that 50 million
doses of ‘flu vaccine for 50 million people would have been imported, too, if
the British government – not our own FDA -- hadn’t found problems at Chiron’s
plant in the UK. Something in the government’s argument about the safety of
prescription drug imports doesn’t make sense,” Shapiro speculates. “Are these
products safe or unsafe – which is it and, if we’re not sure, why do we let in
any of it?”
