Food Fight! Pima Medical Institute Hosts Food Drive

(PRWEB) July 13, 2005 -- Students at Pima Medical Institute, 370 Printers
Parkway in Colorado Springs gave a new meaning to the word “food fight” when
they joined forces to collect more than 3,000 pounds of non perishable food for
the Springs Rescue Mission in Colorado Springs.
When PMI’s Colorado
Springs campus was informed about the food shortage at the mission, a friendly
competition between the different classes developed and canned food and other
supplies started streaming in for the month-long challenge. The winning
students, who represent the Core Class of students, collected 1,043 pounds,
followed by the Medical Assistant class with 920 pounds. PMI supplied pizza for
the winners and doughnuts, cookies and punch for everyone who
participated.
“The students really took the bull by the horns and ran
with this one. Every available corner was stacked with non-perishable food and
supplies,” said Karen McGrath, campus director for the Colorado Springs career
college. “We not only pride ourselves in providing a quality education for our
students at PMI, we also encourage compassion and community service. This food
drive speaks volumes of how our students are making a difference even before
they begin their medical careers.”
The Springs Rescue Mission, 5 W. Las
Vegas St. in Colorado Springs, is a non-profit organization. Their goal is to
feed and clothe the hungry and homeless of the Colorado Springs area. Donations
are accepted year-round, but there is always a shortage of supplies in the
summer months, according to Walter Lofton, food services coordinator for the
mission. For more information about charitable donations or hosting a food
drive, call the mission at 719-632-1822.
